Why Canvas was born
After our first villa project in Lombok sold out, we had a choice: build another, or build something different.
We watched. We listened. We walked the island.
We spoke with founders, CEOs, and retreat leaders all searching for the same thing: a destination in Lombok built for privacy, depth, and meaningful group experiences.
The pattern became obvious.
Lombok had villas. It had hotels. It had beautiful places to stay. But almost nothing built for professionals.
Then one morning at Are Guling, paddling back to shore, I looked up at the hillside above the bay.
Private. Accessible. Incredible. Close to enjoy Kuta. Privacy to disconnect.
That was it. The gap. The moment.
Enter Canvas.
Lombok's first purpose-designed corporate retreat destination. A category of one, in a market full of more-of-the-same.

Why Canvas was born
Some places change the way you see the world. Lombok was one of those places for me.
Coming from a professional background in California, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the pace of work and everyday life.
Lombok gave me something different. Breathtaking views, a slower rhythm, and space to think, create and reconnect. I wanted to share that experience with others.
With the growing demand for wellness, corporate retreats and more meaningful ways to connect, I saw an opportunity to create something special.
That's how Canvas was born.

Brandon Gray - Co-Founder: Vice President, Enterprise AI & Software Platforms at Audubon Companies, a U.S.-based engineering company. Shaun's best friend since they were five in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Brandon believes Lombok's inspiring setting offers corporate teams a rare chance to step away, reconnect and think differently.
Joey Simon - Co-Founder: From Coronado, California, Joey worked in financial analysis for a California property developer. Inspired by Lombok's natural beauty, he shares the vision of creating thoughtfully designed spaces where professionals can unplug and recharge. Joey also co-led the Serangan English School initiative with Shaun.

Building in Lombok means being part of the community. What began as an English school with around 15-20 children has grown to 60 students, with a new classroom and more opportunities ahead. Spearheaded by Shaun and Joey, Serangan English School reflects something important to all of us: as we grow here, we want the local community to grow with us.
